CYSS National Youth Event

Catholic Youth Service Scotland's mandate includes bringing young people together from the eight dioceses of Scotland for a national event once a year.

In recent years, this has taken the form of an overnight gathering in Gartmore House Activity Centre in Gartmore near Aberfoyle.

Each diocese commits to bringing up to eight young people (aged 16-35) to the event for a programme of prayer, discussion, inputs and workshops and social time. Whilst the National Youth Event is not a retreat, it has proved to be a wonderful opportunity for young Scots Catholics to come together to reflect upon their faith in a national context.

The theme and focus for the event usually draws upon the Holy Father's Message to Young People for that year.

2005    We've Come to Worship Him                                  St Margaret's parish, Stirling
2006    Holy Spirit - Spirit of Truth                                    Gartmore House
2007    Holy Spirit - Spirit of Love                                      Gartmore House
2008    Holy Spirit - Spirit of Fortitude & Witness           Gartmore House
2009    We Have Set Our Hope on the Living God           Gartmore House
2010    The Church Now Belongs to You                            Gartmore House
2011    Finding Life's Purpose                                              Gartmore House

Each year, the gathering is addressed by Cardinal Keith O'Brien. In 2009, the closing mass was presided over by Bishop Joseph Toal of Argyll and the Isles Diocese. In 2010, Bishop Philip Tartaglia of Paisley Diocese, presided at the Mass. Cardinal O'Brien in 2011 was the main celebrant of the Mass at the National Event.

Each diocese gathers together delegates for the event in different ways. If you are interested in the National Youth Event, please contact your local diocesan youth ministry office through the links provided on Our Members page.
